Computer Vision Treatment

The typical person spends hours in front of a smartphone or computer every day, which increases their risk of computer vision syndrome. At Total Vision Eye Health Associates, our Port Orange optometrist team helps adults and children learn how to recognize computer vision syndrome and incorporate strategies that will help them avoid symptoms.

What is Computer Vision?

Computer vision syndrome, or digital eye strain, is a collection of symptoms that develop due to factors associated with prolonged computer use. Digital screens are usually brightly lit and emit a lot of blue light, which is a high-energy form of light that can deeply penetrate the eyes and interact with cells in our retinas. Some evidence suggests that excessive blue light exposure can disrupt the sleep-wake cycle and may increase the risk of future eye health problems like cataracts.

People also tend to blink less while using computers. Blinking normally refreshes the film of tears that protects and nourishes the outer surface of the eyes. Computer users tend to stare or focus for long periods, which can fatigue the eyes. Poor posture, poor ergonomic set-up, bright overhead lights, and glare can also worsen computer vision, especially if a person has uncorrected vision problems like farsightedness or astigmatism.

Signs and Symptoms of Computer Vision

Most people who use computers will experience temporary yet uncomfortable symptoms like:

  • Tired eyes
  • Blurry vision
  • Dry eyes
  • Headaches
  • Neck pain
  • Shoulder pain

Avoid Computer Vision with Help from Our Eye Doctor Team

You don't have to give up your digital devices just to keep your eyes healthy. Our Port Orange optometry team can help you avoid computer vision in several ways.

A comprehensive eye exam is important to assess your vision and determine whether you need prescription eyewear. We even offer prescription and non-prescription blue light glasses which reduce your blue light exposure. We also educate patients about healthy digital habits that can improve eye health and focus:

  • Practice 20/20/20: after 20 minutes of computer time, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds
  • Put reminders at your desk to blink more and take breaks
  • Adjust the brightness and contrast on your screen for greater viewing comfort
  • Improve ambient lighting to minimize glare
  • Position your screen at eye level, one arm's length away
  • Install blue-light-blocking apps on your devices
  • Schedule routine eye exams to ensure your vision needs are up-to-date
